1998年8月、アメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州アーバインにて結成されたロックバンド。学校を通して知り合ったDustin KensrueとTeppei Teranishiはいくつかのバンドで一緒にプレイする仲であった。その後Teppeiがスケートボード仲間であったEddie Breckenridgeをベーシストとして誘い、そこにEddieの兄であるRiley Breckenridgeがドラマーとして参加したことによりバンドは結成される。1999年には僅か2日のセッションで制作されたEP『First Impressions』を自己でリリース(1,000枚)。これが発端となって、翌2000年にはGreenflag Recordsより1stアルバム『Identity Crisis』をリリース。特に初期の音楽性は高速なメロディックハードコア/ポストハードコアを主に基盤としながらも、ヘヴィなディストーションの効いたギターリフや、主にTeppeiによる流麗でメロディアスなリードギター(Pantera、Megadethに影響を受けたらしい)、複雑なテンポチェンジを頻繁に行うなど、この時期から独自の音楽性を持っていた。このスタイルで2ndアルバム『The Illusion of Safety』(2002年)、3rdアルバム『The Artist in the Ambulance』(2003年)をリリースしてアップデートを重ねる。しかし、2005年の4thアルバム『Vheissu』で、バンドの音楽性は大幅に変化を見せ、エレクトロニックなビートやキーボードなどを導入し、実験的な要素をソングライティングに取り入れた。この傾向は、2007年の5thアルバム『The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II』、2008年の6thアルバム『The Alchemy Index Vols.
