ジャンルを超えたジャズ・ピアニスト　1940～　40年生まれ。ジャズだけにくくれないが、ジャズ・ピアニスト。60年にドナルド・バード（tp）のグループで本格的に活動開始。63年からマイルス・デイヴィス（tp）クインテットに抜擢され、グループの黄金時代を支える。73年にファンク・アルバム『ヘッド・ハンターズ』で活動の幅を拡大。その後もヒップホップの『フューチャー・ショック』（83年）、『フューチャー2フューチャー』（2001年）、2005年もポップ・スターとのコラボ作『ポシビリティーズ』など、非ジャズ作を発表する一方で、ニュー・スタンダード作、ガーシュウィン作やマイルスのトリビュート作などシリアスなジャズも並行してリリースを続けている。常に時代を動かし続ける“カメレオン”な才人。Dr.NAKAJIMA著
