1998年、オハイオ州クリーブランドで結成。インディーズ時代から、EPを10000枚以上売り上げるなど高い人気を誇り、その勢いを駆ってRoadrunner Recordsと契約。OZZFESTや企画アルバム「Roadrunner United」への参加を通じて知名度を上げる。 3rdアルバム「Chimaira」発表後Roadrunnerとの契約を終了し、Ferret MusicおよびNuclear Blastへと移籍。4thアルバム「Resurrection」はビルボード40位、5thアルバム「The Infection」はビルボード30位というヒット作になった。 度重なるメンバーチェンジの末、オリジナルメンバーはマーク・ハンター<vo>のみとなったものの、Bleed The Sky、Dååth、Dirge Withinといったバンドから腕利きプレイヤーを集めて活動を続け、2011年発表の6thアルバム「The Age of Hell 」はビルボード初登場54位という結果を収めた。
