1985年、オランダの北ブラバンド州アイントホーウェンでヘンク・ヴァン・ダー・ラーズを中心として結成。　プログレッシブ・メタルの要素を大きく取り込んだパワーメタルを持ち味としている。 ソロ・キャリアなどで名を馳せたイアン・パリーが加入したことでバンドは大きく躍進したとされるが、その加入後2枚目のアルバム「Principles of Pain」発表以後、活動を停止している。
