1981年、デンマークのコペンハーゲンで結成。邪悪なメイクを顔に施したキング・ダイヤモンド(Vo)の狂気を帯びたハイトーン・ヴォイスと、ハンク・シャーマン(G)の捻れたギターリフの組み合わせで生まれる独特のヘヴィメタルは、後続に大きな影響を与えた。METALLICAが、カヴァーアルバム「Garage Inc」でMERCYFUL FATEの代表曲をメドレー形式で演奏していることからも、それは如実に窺える。方向性の違いから1985年に解散。1992年に再結成するも、2000年再び解散した。
