Black Sabbathを脱退したロニー・ジェイムス・ディオ(Vo.ex-RAINBOW,ELF)と、同じくBlack Sabbathを脱退したヴィニー・アピス(Dr.ex-AXIS)によって、1982年に結成。DIOというバンド名は、ロニーのファミリーネームであると同時に、イタリア語で「神」を意味する(ロニーはイタリア系の移民の子)。ファンタジー色の濃いロニーの歌詞と、様式美を追究した楽曲は好評を博し、デビューアルバム「Holy Diver」と2ndアルバム「The Last In Line」は全米でプラチナムを獲得。その後ヘヴィメタル人気が下火となってからも、欧州で根強い支持を受け続けた。2006年にはLOUD PARKに参加する形で来日。当時ロニーは既に60歳を越えていたが、一切衰えのないパフォーマンスを繰り広げ日本のファン達の度肝を抜いた。2010年5月16日、ロニーは胃癌で逝去。バンドの活動も、半永久的に停止することになった。
