1976年、イギリスヨークシャーのバーンズリーでビフ・ハイフォード(Vo)を中心に結成。1979年、「SAXON」でデビュー。NWOBHMの代表格として活躍する。1980年に発売された「WHEELS OF STEEL 」は、全英5位にチャートインした。1984年発売の6thアルバム「CRUSADER」から、ポップさを強調する方向性にシフトするも、人気が低迷。1990年にリリースされた10thアルバム「SOLID BALL OF ROCK」辺りから再び正統派のヘヴィメタルへとスタイルを戻し、再度人気を獲得。欧州において揺るぎない地位を確立するに至った。
