1986年、ドイツのノルトライン＝ヴェストファーレン州ヘルネで結成。当初のバンド名はAvengerだった。1990年初頭、Running Wild, U.D.O., Motörhead,Saxonといったバンドとツアーしその名前を広めていく。　　独特のギターリフとメロディセンスが特徴で、ドイツ出身のメロディックメタルバンドだが、いわゆるジャーマンメタルとはかなり手触りの違うヘヴィメタルをプレイしている。　アルバム「Thirteen」の頃はゴシックと呼べる程にメランコリックでディープな音楽性に変化、オーケストラをつれて欧州をツアーしたこともあった。　　その後、ギタリストにヴィクター・スモールスキを迎えてからは、クラシックをバックグラウンドに持つ彼のテクニカルなプレイと作曲センスにより、更に個性が確立されることとなった。
